The most common species spotted are the blue whales and sperm whales, spinner dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. You could observe whales even from an elevated area from the shores, but if you want to have a more personal experience, going on a whale watching tour is something you should do. The exciting news is that in Trincomalee you could spot so many of them just minutes from the shore. The ideal time for whale watching in Eastern Province is from May to Oct.  The place has fast become a topmost spot to watch Blue and Sperm Whales and Dolphins. The months of June and July have been really good for Blue Whale seeing. Plan a whale watching trip for an exciting experience of a lifetime and do not miss out on viewing one of ocean’s biggest wildlife spectacles.

Whale watching Boat trip

The Dolphin and Whale observing boat trip starts from the main jetty at Trincomalee harbor. The trip starts at around 5.30Am from Foul Point and navigates southwards for 3 to 5 hours. This is an ideal place to spot Blue Whales and Humpback Whales as well.

Trincomalee in the eastern cost of Sri lanka has become a major spot for watching Whales. Number of sperm whales and blue whales can be spotted off the eastern coast of Trinco during the months of May to October.  The oldest and the largest sea creatures of the ocean will casually glide past you when you board on a whale watching excursion off the Eastern coast of Trincomalee. Whale Watching Trips are mostly organized in fully insured trawler boats which will last for 3 to 4 hours. You can start to spot the whales from approximately eight nautical miles east of Trincomalee costliness. Blue whales are even occasionally spotted from the mainland.

On a rough sea condition or with high winds it is difficult to spot the whales. Check the weather and if you have a choice, go for the best day. Be sure to bring a hat, shades and sunscreen, you are always in need of good sun guard. Usually the whales are spotted at a distance and their stunts only last for few seconds. Clicking a picture of a whale is tough than it seems, bring a camera with good zoom and quick aim to have good images.  Make sure you wear comfortable cloths and consider taking motion sickness medication before you get on a whale observing boat.

Another ideal site for whale observing would be Dondra in the South Seas of Sri Lanka. The coast guards operating in the area make sure that the tourists abide the safety precautions and guidelines before and during their tour.
