Puliyanthivu (island) is the metropolitan area, most of the government offices (Kachchery, Municipal council, District main post office, Agriculture department, Ds office, irrigation department, Road development authority, Teaching hospital ) and schools, banks, commercial establishments and places of importance (Dutch fort, Gandhi park, Methodist central college, St Michael’s college, Vincent Girls High School, Cecilia’s National girl’s high school, St Mary’s Cathedral, Weber national Stadium, Puliyanthivu Methodist church, Eastern international School, Jami-Us-Salam Jummah mosque ) Koddamunai bridge connects Puliyanthivu island to the rest of the main land. Before the koddamunai bridge was constructed, Batticaloa gate area was used at a loading and unloading point. Old cranes used during that time is still visible at the location. It is believed that William Ault, the first Methodist missionary landed in Puliyanthivu Batticaloa. A statue is placed next to the Batticaloa gate to remember his valuable services.
The appealing downtown area of Koddamunai lies next to Batticalo’s Main Puliyanthivu Island. Both these areas together are known as Batticaloa Town. Kodamunai is the busiest place in Batticaloa during the morning hours. The Batticaloa police station, Public Market, Handloom sales center, Banks, private hospitals, schools, restaurants and shopping centers are located in Koddamunai . The best way to explore the place is by walking. The best starting point would be the Batticaloa fort, refer the map below for directions to reach the fort. You could walk on the walls of the fort and see what history have on store for you. On the way to Gandhi park from the fort, you would pass batticaloa high courts, Webber stadium and fountain park. A new tourist information center is been built near the fountain park. Within the Gandhi park is the Batticaloa Gate monument and the statue of William Ault. Gandhi Park is the best place to relax and view the beauty of Batticaloa lagoon. Batticaloa library and the science museum is located next to the park. You could visit the public market next, passing over the Koddamunai bridge. Walk around the stalls, speak to some people and know the local vegetable and fruit.
