Kanniya Hot water springs, Trincomalee
Located ten Kilometers northwest of Trincomalee town, the kenniya hot water springs is a place full of surprises. In total there are seven wells, even though the wells are next to each other, the hotness between them are deferent. The square shaped wells are less than five feet deep and take few minutes to recharge. Touch and feel the hotness of each of them, you could even have a bath if you are going prepared for it.
The legends say, Vishnu wished to foil a mission of Ravana appeared in a form of an old man and told him that his mother had passed away. Dropping the mission plans Ravana performed the rites for his mother, as he was desperately searching for water for the ablutions the place where Lord Visnu was standing blasted and formed the springs.
Another legend say, Ravana stuck the earth with his battle sward on the rocks seven times creating the springs. The location was there after was used as a Buddhist Monastery. It’s believed that bathing at this spring would cure arthritis, rheumatic pain as well as skin disease. Using Soap and shampoo are prohibited around the wells.
The entrance to the wells opens at Weekdays: 7.00 am – 7.00 pm. Weekends: 6.00 am – 7.00 pm
And at the entrance you will be charged Rs.50
How to reach the Hot water springs
It’s around 135Km from Batticaloa town, from Pasikuda it’s around 100km. From Trincomalee town its 10Km away on the Trincomalee Anuradapura road.
