The airport will soon be a full-fledged domestic air-port in the eastern province of Sri Lanka. Construction work of a new passenger terminal and the renovation of the runway are underway.
The project was launched last year in September 2013 and will be managed by the civil aviation ministry.
The government of Sri Lanka has allocated 750 million for the rehabilitation work.
The airport will have a 1,700 meter long tarmac. The government has planned to set up eight domestic airports throughout the country.
